“Content is King” is one of the oldest and widest spread cited quotes in the digital marketing world such as search engine marketing and content marketing. It is known by most people that this phrase was used and declared by Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft Corporation, in 1994 in an essay named “Content is King”. After that the phrase has become a mantra repeated over and over by SEOs, marketers and it was also used by Google, who domineer the internet, for several years. But this phrased had been used by Summer Redstone and way before that a historian A, Wyatt Tilby used this expression in his book, British North America, 1763-1867. Of course, the content did not have the same meaning of text, audio or video at that time but it had the same meaning as "being content".

The third reason behind this expression is that it can generate new leads and sales by creating awareness in an abundant market and exposing the brand to more consumers. Now, “Content is king” mantra is being used by people widely without knowing whom they are quoting. In its modern context form, the first person who used this phrase originally before Bill Gates wrote his essay was Sumner Redstone. The definition of Sumner Redstone under which he coined this phrase was rather broad including movies, TV shows, Music videos and any form of entertainment. In this definition, Sumner used a basic concept such as the more content you have to provide, the more of an audience you are going to draw in. Bill Gates thought the same, he said, in his essay, that content is a wide term in the field of interactive network such as the internet.

He declared computer software as an important form of content, and it is far more eminent when it comes to Microsoft. Bill Gates gave considerable reason for the phrase “Content is King” by saying that providing content in the form of information can get a company with wide opportunities. According to Bill Gates no company is too small to take part when it comes to content. It has been proven that no company is tsmall because there are biscuit companies and printing companies who are playing their part by creating popular content and sharing them. Through this expression, Bill Gates predicted the future he said that if people are expected to read a screen then they have to provide deep and extremely up-to-date information.

Now, at least twenty years later people are interacting with each other through articles, and social media online commenting systems. People are getting personally attached to the content and are rewarded with up-to-date information and which is one of those reasons he said content is king. So far, it can be said that content is considered to be king because it is the basic concept of digital marketing and economy which is called as Attention Economy. In the Attention Economy you can get rewards and opportunities by creating content and influencing the audience.

When Bill Gates said “Content is king”, he also said that “Internet is a tidal wave” it means that the internet is an unexpected place, and nothing is stable here. It can be said that if there are opportunities due to the content being a king then there far more challenges because the internet is a tidal wave. There are specific properties for content to be king such as unique, entertaining and informative, optimized for research engine, reader-friendly, well-structured and targeting a specific group.
