Difference between Content and Copy

Content and copy are two different things but for years, these terms have been used interchangeably because of the annoyance of the copywriters and content marketers. There may be a question that it is important to know that these are two different terms or does it even matter. Yes, it does matter because one of these terms expresses strategy to draw the attraction, and the other one is capable to grow the business. If one knows how to distinguish them then he can easily define his market, the prior activities that can help to grow business, and capable of hiring beneficial people. There is a notion delivered by Elizabeth Campbell that can explain the real deal about these two terms, she said, “Content tells and copy sells”.

It is more eminent to know what basically are copy and content because their explanation as being similar to each other and their differences are based on it. Copy can be defined as written communications used to influence people and to boost their attention to a brand such as brochures, email marketing, and advertisements. Content is information advertised to people through any means of media such as a video, a blog or an article. It can be said that content is any type of marketing material and it can be targeted on a specific group of audience, it is educational. Copy can be expressed as a language used for work and business and its purpose is clear and specific, it delivers sales. But content has one advantage over copy and that is a wide range of applications.



The big difference between copy and content is when it comes to careers such as content writer and copywriter. A content writer is bound to provide material and data about a particular service or product. While a copywriter along with providing critical data and information will have the intention to urge the audience to buy the product. The content writer also has intentions and one of them is to gain trust and credibility by providing truthful, and most recent information. He plays with the thoughts of the audience, and construct new ideas upon what they already know. On the other hand, copywriter starts from the bottom and he doesn’t do this to build ideas about some product but to persuade.

There is another basic difference between copy and content, and that is the length and given details. The copy material is short and hence less detailed, this is because it is usually to the point such as advertisement taglines. But content pieces are relatively longer and more described because the writer has to build the groundwork to explain his notions. For instance, take an essay or research paper, to make it attractive, the writer makes sure the headline should work as “copy” and the body part should work as “content”.

Looking through similarities and differences, it is fine to say that copy can be considered to be content, but content cannot be the copy. In this way, they both can overlap, such as a blog post, which is content, can work to inform but with commercial intentions, which is a copy.
