Is this a real job? What makes an activity to be considered a career, and does copywriting meet those demands? Well, copywriting isn't a new concept, it's been around longer than you think; probably way back before you were even born. So, yeah, this activity must be pretty important, otherwise, there wouldn't be so many blogs and questions being asked. Believe it or not, people have raised entire families by just working copywriting jobs. Copywriting has a job description, and that alone makes this form of literature qualify to be given the same respect as you would any ordinary career out there. If you can agree that advertising is a 'real career', then it should be relatively easy to accept that this form of creative literature also qualifies to be an actual job. In addition to that, copywriting isn't random, it mostly follows a job description, as would any other regular career out there whose credibility as a job isn't being questioned.

Throughout the world, you've probably heard that there are senior writers who make ridiculously huge sums of money, either per hour, per month, or year. Some copywriters take close to $150000 to the bank, just from being creative writers in big marketing agencies, and firms. Others, on an hourly rate, receive $40 to $50, and they do it for many hours on end every day. Well, they obviously didn't get there or earn their current recognition overnight. There are isolated cases, but those are mainly in sports where Terrific Tuesdays exist. In copywriting, there's almost no shortcut, you start somewhere, and work your way to the top like anyone else.

If you meet those big names in the writing industry, you'll realize that there are things they all share in common. Some got into the career accidentally, and fell in love, while others have the regular build-up that justifies their current success. Just like a senior banker would probably tell you that they started their career at the basic clerical position before working their way to the top, similarly, copywriting as a career also has a build-up that demands attention, time, and commitment.

You need education to be given even the slightest consideration in most professions. If you thought that you could just quit school, and set up shop in the copywriting industry, then you're in for a treat, and not the most pleasant treat there is. Copywriting demands a mastery of language, otherwise, your delivery will always be off, and it will be a miracle if you ever sell a product with close to zero literary skills. You've probably heard of some people bragging how they made, say, 45k the previous year, doing copywriting on the side. Well, they didn't just get lucky, they had some form of education on language manipulation, they saw an opportunity, and decided to go for it. To answer the question one more time for clarity purposes, yes, copywriting is considered an actual career.
