How Teachers Check For Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the act of stealing another person’s thoughts, ideas or expressions and writing them as your own without giving credit to the real owner. There are different kinds of plagiarism. These include: complete plagiarism, source-based plagiarism, direct plagiarism, auto plagiarism and many more. Among students, plagiarism of documented work is common. Students tend to copy and paste information from the internet and they sometimes get away with it. Plagiarism is unacceptable fraud that should not be entertained. It is a violation of the law and also ethics.

Plagiarism in the world today has become easy for teachers to detect. Some of the methods teachers use to ensure no plagiarism is done among students include:

Reading critically

Use of the internet. The internet has been advancing in the recent years and with it, the ways of detecting plagiarism. Nowadays, teachers have to only run a student’s work through a plagiarism detector and then the results are indicated. These plagiarism detector sites include: Turnitin.com, the Essay Verify Engine and many more. These sites tend to compare the student’s work with a database and find out the sites the student has gotten his or her information. However, this type of detection is only limited to soft copy of the work. A teacher can decide to make hard copy to soft copy but it would be tiresome.

Reading critically. A teacher is required to read the work of his or her student carefully. The teacher is more likely to notice cases of plagiarism easily while doing so. The teacher should use his or her knowledge on the topic. This is an effective way of detecting plagiarism. If the teacher has doubts, he or she can consult another teacher or consult the internet. A teacher may also be familiar with the site the student got the information. This is possible if the teacher has a wide history of reading and a lot of research.

Identifying strange paper format

Identifying the use of inconsistent writing styles. A case of plagiarism depicts different kinds of writing styles. This is because different sites on the internet have been written in different styles. A student may not realize this violation of his or her work, but the teacher is well aware of the mistake. This automatically shows the presence of plagiarism in the student’s work. To further confirm if the student is really guilty, the teacher may submit a section of the students work on a plagiarism site and prove his or her suspicions.

Identifying strange paper format. This involves the identification of peculiar fonts in the student’s piece of work. Sites on the internet use different fonts and therefore if a student has directly copied from the internet, a teacher can realize that the fonts used are different and inconsistent. This is an obvious case of plagiarism and the student should be punished heavily. Teachers can increase the chances of catching plagiarism in this method by giving a specific font to use as he or she is giving the assignment. After doing this, this method of catching plagiarism will in no doubt be effective.

Comparing previous work of the student

Summoning the student. A teacher can decide to summon a student and ask them to explain what he or she understood about the assignment given. The teacher can also decide to ask the student to repeat or confirm what he or she has written and show understanding while doing so. If the student is unable to explain or prove that he or she has understood what he or she has written, the teacher should come up with a conclusion that the student beyond reasonable doubt has committed the violation of plagiarism. However, this method may sometimes prove inefficient if the student went through his or her work.

Comparing previous work of the student with the written work. A teacher can compare the previous works of a student and therefore determine the ability and strength of the student in stating and explaining himself or herself. If the student shows too much improvement or use of ambiguous words in his or her essay, the teacher may suspect plagiarism in the work with no doubt. This method simply allows a teacher to evaluate the work done by a student by identifying the student’s abilities. Use of complicated words beyond a student’s league may also show plagiarism.

How Teachers Check For Plagiarism

Identifying unclear or incorrect sources. A student may sometime indicate the wrong references in the bibliography. This may be due to the knowledge that he or she has plagiarized his or her work and therefore does not want the teacher to realize this fact. The teacher can therefore decide to venture into the references on his own and decide if the student has indicated wrong references. If the student has given wrong information then the teacher can conclude that the student has been involved in plagiarism acts.

Checking if the student’s work veers off the topic. Information from the internet tends to generalize information and not tackle specific information. Due to this property, it is easy to catch cases of plagiarism since the topic given is never discussed about in a convincing manner. The teacher should read the student’s work carefully so as to identify any out of topic sentences.

Identifying presence of peculiar repetitions. On the internet, sites tend to repeat information on other sites. Therefore, plagiarized work is full of repetitions. The teacher should be keen on noticing these repetitions. For example if the student repeats a statement in three paragraphs or repeats a certain point in two different paragraphs, the teacher should be able to see clearly the act of plagiarism. It is therefore essential that when a teacher is going through a student’s work, he or she be careful and very precise.

Identifying presence of a web address on the student’s work. A student who is involved in plagiarism may end up pasting even the web address on his or her work. This might be from a mistake or forgetting to seclude the address. The teacher may decide to visit the web address and go through the site so as to investigate if the student has copied the information directly or not.
