Due to the increase in cases involving plagiarism among students, teachers have devised methods to detect plagiarism in student’s work. These methods include:

Use of the internet to detect

Identifying the application of inconsistent writing styles in one piece of work. Plagiarism is evident here since no one piece of work can contain two different writing styles. The difference of style may be as a result of copying and pasting on different sites in the internet. The student may not realize the difference in the writing styles but if the teacher looks carefully he or she can identify the error and go on to deduce that it is a case of plagiarism.

Use of the internet to detect plagiarism. In the world today, the internet has advanced so much that it can be used in the detection of plagiarism cases. Some sites like Turtin.com and the essay verifying engine are some sites that have been created to identify plagiarism. These sites tend to compare the essay keyed in to a database and hence are efficient. However, these plagiarism detectors are only limited to soft-copy and not the hard-copy.

Identifying the use of unclear or

Noticing the use of extraordinary fonts in one essay. Fonts are the nature of the words being written. Different sites have different type of fonts. If the student tends to plagiarize his or her work from different sites by cutting and pasting, it is most likely that the fonts will not be similar. This error makes it easy for the teacher to notice the dishonest act of plagiarism easily. To ensure no student escapes being caught, the teacher should specify the type of font he or she wants the students to use.

Identifying the use of unclear or incorrect sources. Once the student has plagiarized, he or she will tend to change and modify the reference area so the teacher cannot identify the case. Any suspicion by the teacher that wrong sources have been given should be looked at carefully and it should be determined if the work is relevant or irrelevant.

Ensuring that the essay does not veer-off topic. Most online essays usually give a general view of whatever they are discussing and hence one cannot easily manipulate that information to fit a specific topic by the teacher. The teacher responsible for marking the essay should be extra careful and identify any situation where the student writer has veered off the topic he or she is discussing. If the writer veers off the topic, it should be set aside as a possible case of plagiarism.

Summoning of the student. This is a very effective method of bringing plagiarized work to justice as this is usually a one-on-one conversation with the student. The teacher can test the students understanding of the given question and if the student relates well with what he or she has written. If the student's explanation does not match or reflect what is on the essay, then it is considered as a case of plagiarism, and the necessary measures are taken afterwards.

Determining if the ability of the student corresponds to the work he or she has submitted. If a student submits work that surpasses his or her ability, the teacher should take time to analyze the essay appropriately. If the student has used sophisticated language and unexpected words, then that specific essay should be considered as a case of plagiarism before it is proved otherwise. The involved teacher should compare the student's essay to essays written earlier by the student.
