Identifying the content of a website using the URL

Our world is developing quickly and technology is advancing rapidly with each passing day. From modern transportation networks such as roads and railways to the advancement of computerized robots and processes, humans have indeed taken a huge leap towards modernizing the world. Computers are the center of all these developments since they are the second brains after humans, therefore, leading to jobs like computer engineers, software developers and web designers.

However, some computer terms and knowledge may be difficult for someone who is not used to them especially those who have little interest in knowing the technical terms of a computer system. Among the many terms found in computer software is the URL. You may be curious to know if you can identify a webpage’s content using the URL since the URL appears complex to the eyes of a regular computer user. However, there is no need to worry since this matter will be discussed in depth below.

It is commonly used on the

Obviously, the URL is a common term that is used on the internet. Its initials stand for Uniform Resource Locator which is simply known to many people as a web address. The URL is important in a computer since it specifies its location on a computer network. It is also a known mechanism for retrieving computer network in case it is lost during usage. This term URL is not common to many people and most internet users refer to it as URI. The URL has several uses on the internet that will be discussed below.

It is commonly used on the internet for references to web pages. The URL is also useful in sending emails since it enhances the security of the email by specifying the location on a computer network. This means that a person who uses emails for dishonest reasons such as terrorism and cyberbullying can easily be tracked by the police. The URL is also important in file transfers and in database access of a computer.

A filename is the last part

In order to identify the webpages’ content, it is important to have a piece of good knowledge of the specific parts of a URL. A URL is made up of three parts which are the scheme, domain and filename. The scheme is also known as the protocol while the domain is known as the hostname. It is the first part of the URL and is written as Http. Domain also is known as hostname is the second part of the URL and an example of the domain is

A filename is the last part of a URL and it is written as index.htm7. With all those parts put together while considering our example, a general URL would look:http// As you can observe, this writing format is a new concept to many regular computer users who simply type and wait for the computer to do its job.

The top-level domain which is the

Scheme or the protocol tells your browser what type of address is being used. There are several types of schemes but there only two main types of schemes which are often used and is Http or https. The domain name is the second part of a URL and is written after the scheme. It is further divided into three subdivisions which are the subdomain, the second level domain and the top-level domain. One of the subdomains is used in identifying the name of the organization.

The top-level domain which is the third sub-branch domain gives more information on what kind of a site you are in. These sites are usually written in abbreviations and they include gov for government, org for organization or co for company. The domain is the most important part of the URL since you can identify the organization or description of the content of a webpage. Studying the domain is, therefore, one of the ways of identifying the content of the webpage using the URL.

After the domain name, the next part is known as the file path which is simply referred to as the path. The file path is crucial since it commands your browser to load a specific page. When the file path is not present, you will find yourself loading a default page in which you may be redirected back to the home screen. However, you don’t need to worry since all you have to do is to type whatever information you wanted and the computer will sort all these background file paths for you.

Your URL may also have a segment that is known as the parameters. This parameter is a string of characters that is found after the path. The string usually starts with a question mark and goes on to form a complex series of letters known as the parameter string. Some symbols in the parameter are usually confusing to a regular computer user with little expertise but are important to the server.

URL has an anchor that is also found after the path in the URL. It carries out the same functions as the parameters. As the parameter, the function of the anchor is to command the browser to lead you to a specific page. The difference between the parameter and the anchor is that the anchor begins with a hashtag, unlike the parameter which begins with a question mark.

There are currently two ways of identifying webpages content using the URL. The first way has been mentioned above and is through the use of studying words in the domain name in the URL. Another way of identifying the content of the webpage using the URL is through reading the names which are found in the path or the filename.

You should know something about the URL since it may assist you in finding the correct information about a particular topic from the internet. Information is not as easy as you may think it is to find it on the internet. This is because you can be directed to an unwanted site which contains shady information or false news. It is very common to experience this inconvenience with media news pages. The URL is also important in determining whether a link is legit or is a fraud. This may save you from viruses or cyber theft.
