Proofreading marks are symbols which are used to correct errors in documents and other written works. There are inserted in places where the mistakes are to denote changes that ought to be made, for example, words, sentences, and even formatting. The symbol used to correct punctuation mark mistakes is called the carret which is has a triangle shape. The carret can face either upwards and downward depending on the kind of correction that needs to be done. Where there is a need to insert an apostrophe or quotation marks, the downward carret is used and it is placed over the word.

On the other hand, the carret pointing upwards is put below a word to indicate that a comma is missing and needs to be inserted. To show that a full stop(period) is lacking, a period with a circle around it, is used. Moreover, this sign can also be used to indicate that something is missing in a sentence. Three horizontal lines are placed underneath a word/letter to show that it needs capitalization. These are useful symbols that one should understand for proofreading a document.
