Writing styles that use footnotes

Footnotes are raised letters/numbers that are placed in the body of an essay. They are used for two main purposes: as a type of citation in most citation styles and as a source of extra details. Two types of footnotes are widely used in essays, and they include those that provide extra details that shorten content in a text. The other is the copyright footnotes that are used to credit the sources. Both forms of footnotes usually appear at the end of a page together with small letters/numbers that also occur in the main text. One main value of using footnotes is that you can provide extra details without diverting your reader's attention from the main text.

Most humanities research essays such as arts, history, and literature use footnotes. Under this structure, sources are cited using lettered/numbered footnotes. Every note relates to a raised letter/number in the main text. Citation styles that use footnotes include Chicago, Turabian, American Chemical Society (ACS), and OSCOLA. If you are using any of these styles, you need to include a raised letter/number at the end of a sentence, which has the details of a source. Each letter/number matches the footnote numbers/letters where you provide details like date, the author, work title, etc. Since most citation styles that use footnotes follow the same structure, this article will focus on only two styles, Chicago and Turabian citation styles.

Likewise, you need to add a note (footnote or end note) in the Bibliography and Notes structure when using a source, abstract, paraphrase, or a quote.

Turabian Citation Style<br />

Under this style, footnotes are included at the end of a page, but end notes are recorded at either the end of every section/chapter or the end of an essay. In both cases, a raised letter/number related to a footnote need to be placed in a text after the end of the sentence.
